Turn my eyes from looking at worthless things; and give me life in your ways.
Psalm 119:37 ESV
There are times that we need to pull away from the things of the world and focus on God. “The
things of the world” can certainly include more than just food. In fact, in our world they are
more likely to be things such as: television, movies, Facebook, Twitter, cell phones, and the
Internet. None of these things are wrong in and of themselves, but they are avenues for a
mental and spiritual crowd to gather around us and drown out the Holy Spirit’s voice.
Fasting is a means of disconnecting from the distractions of daily life
and consciously choosing to bring God into greater focus.
When our lives are so full of things like reading, talking, socializing, playing, and entertainment,
it’s no wonder we often don’t hunger for God.
During this time of fasting, deny yourself. Lay aside your business and let the Holy Spirit birth a
spiritual hunger in you that can only be satisfied by God Himself.
Dear children, keep away from anything that might take God’s place in your hearts.
1 John 5:21 NLT
“He is no fool who gives what he cannot keep to gain what he cannot lose.”
— Jim Ellott, Missionary
He (Jesus) said to them all, “If anyone desires to come after Me, let him deny himself,
and take up his cross daily, and follow Me. Luke 9:23 NKJV
Prayer Focus: How do you need to “deny yourself” today?
How do you need to “follow Jesus” today?
Whatever you do through out the day, picture yourself doing it with Jesus. Follow Him into
every task, every encounter, every conversation. Everything you do today, imagine doing it
with Jesus. If you lose focus, stop and refocus. Take time to bring Him back in view. What
difference would this make to you?
