Pursuing Jesus

Pastor Steve TaylorFasting 2017

Keep your eyes on Jesus, who both began and finished this race we’re in.
Study how he did it.
Hebrews 12:2 (MSG)
Years ago I used to run a lot. I ran several half marathons and even one marathon but several surgeries later, I had to
give up running and started doing the elliptical trainer. Sometimes I feel like a hamster running on a wheel, lots of
motion and activity but not really going anywhere.
Sometimes our spiritual lives can feel a lot like that, lots of activity but not really making any forward progress. The
Christian life isn’t supposed to be like that but it can easily slip into something that resembles it if we forget to keep our
eyes fixed on the goal.
Read About It: Hebrews 12:1-3, Phil. 3:7-14
Think About It: As Christians, God has called us to a new life and he has also called us to fix our focus on Him and to
pursue Him with all of our passion. Paul said that his goal of his life was to know Christ, to be like him, and to become all
that Christ has in mind for him to his dying breath. This was his single-minded pursuit and it absorbed all of his time and
energy.
Pray About It: In a marathon, you’re shedding what you don’t need in order to run more efficiently. You shed the
useless stuff so your running can be light and without unnecessary impediments. Now, can you imagine the effect it
would have on our community and world if all of us would commit to running the race like this… seeing every moment…
every facet of our lives… as part of a race to become more like Jesus? In the end, it’s the only life worth running but you
have to choose it.
• How is your race going right now? What or whom are you focused on right now?
• Where do you need to stop looking back so you can return to moving forward?
• Is there anything you need to let go of that might be slowing you down?
