….be holy, as I am holy…..

But now you must be holy in everything you do, just as God who chose you is
holy. 16 For the Scriptures say, “You must be holy because I am holy.”
1 Peter 1:15-16
“99 and 44/100 percent pure.” In 1895, Proctor & Gamble adopted this slogan to sell Ivory
Soap. It was effective advertising, and the phrase is still remembered to this day. According to
Wikipedia, the original formula for Ivory was: sodium tallowate, sodium cocoate, water, sodium
chloride, sodium silicate, magnesium sulfate and fragrance. And air. Lots of air. Ivory soap
floated. If these ingredients are “pure,” and there is a lot of air in the soap, you’ve got to
wonder: What’s the other .56%? The truth is, Ivory soap wasn’t that great.
99 and 44/100% pure proved to be a deceptive advertising ploy that led consumers to accept
that “almost pure” was “pure enough.” The problem was this product, that countless people
were putting on their skins, was actually harmful. A key ingredient, glycerine, that could have
counter-acted the skin drying properties of Ivory was left out to keep down cost. Key ingredient
intentionally left out. Useless ingredient (air) intentionally added.
So now we have this soap. It does its job (cleaning) but at what cost? Ultimately, the cost was
the physical health of the consumer. Eventually, Proctor and Gamble had to change the formula.
What about what we eat? Are we caught in the same deceptive “99 44/100 pure is pure enough”
trap with the products we consume? What if we really looked at the food that we eat? Are we
buying into the same quick, convenient, cheap trap that led millions to buy a harmful soap?
In Leviticus 11:44 and again in v. 45, God says to the Israelites “be holy as I am holy.” Note
that He says this in the context of what we call “dietary laws.’ As we continue through this 21
day fast, let us consider purifying our diet. Our physical bodies need the same attention as our
soul and spirit as we move toward 100% purity.
Don’t you realize that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit, who lives in you and was given
to you by God? You do not belong to yourself, for God bought you with a high price. So you
must honor God with your body.
1 Corinthians 6:19-20
Prayer focus: The health and strength of our bodies are integral to the health and strength of
our souls and spirits. Pray today, in thanksgiving, for the food that God has provided to nourish
your body. Are there beneficial things you should add to your diet? Are there useless things you
should eliminate? What about the amount of food we eat?
