An Inside Job

Pastor Steve TaylorFasting 2017

Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a right spirit within me.
Psalm 51:10
Sometimes God’s people do some unholy things. Just think about David for a minute. Although David was a man after
God’s own heart, he was also guilty of some pretty horrible things as well such as adultery and murder. For months
David had been going through the motions. On the outside, everything looked fine but on the inside it was a different
story. He was a mess and he was living a lie.
David didn’t come clean with God until Nathan the Prophet confronted him and brought his sin out into the open.
Although the confession had been forced, it helped put David on the road to restoring his relationship with God.
Read About It: Psalm 51
David came clean with God but he also realized that wasn’t something he could do on his own. It had to be an inside
job. God had to make him clean again. The same thing is true in our lives as well. Only God has the power to forgive
our sins and restore our spirits. And, He does it from the inside out.
Think About It: Sometimes God’s holy people do some pretty unholy things. We may hide it from others but we
cannot hide it from God. Who wants to carry around that kind of guilt or shame? So, we need to do what David did.
Confess it. Repent of it. And, ask God to do an inside job of making the unholy holy again.
If we confess our sins, God is faithful and just and will forgive us and purify us from all unrighteousness. 1 John 1:9
Pray About It:
• In light of what David has done, how does he dare approach God?
• On what basis does David hope for a restored relationship?
• Has covering up sin ever backfired in your life? How have you seen God’s mercy when you owned up to
